Team PEI Men’s Baseball defeats BC, advances to semi finals

St. John’s, NL –  Team PEI Men’s baseball have advanced to the Medal Round at the 2025 Canada Games, held in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, following a 3-1 victory over Team BC on Wednesday afternoon at St. Pat’s Ballpark.

Alex Curran (Stratford) led the way, pitching all seven innings with only five hits given up and scoring two RBIs at the plate.

“To go up and beat (BC), it just really shows the talent that we have here on PEI,” said Curran, following the win. “It’s a great feeling”.

Team PEI went 4-0 in their round robin play to earn top spot in Pool B, which faced them off against British Columbia, the top team in Pool A. With the win, PEI advances to the semi-finals scheduled to be played Friday afternoon (opponent TBD).

“I feel really confident. We’re all swinging it well. We’re all playing well defensively, We’re all pitching well – the boys are rolling so I’m really hoping to keep that going,” said Curran about advancing to the semi-finals.”We don’t give up. We just keep fighting and let’s go for gold!”

Team PEI Baseball has never previously medaled in baseball at a Canada Games; PEI’s only medal in a team sport at  Summer Games came in 1993 with men’s softball earning bronze.

In round robin play, PEI defeated New Brunswick (11-3), Manitoba (7-3), Nova Scotia (4-0), and the host Newfoundland (10-8) to go undefeated before facing off with BC. Cornwall’s Rylan MacPhail leads the team at the plate with five RBIs, nine hits, and a .500 batting average through 22 plate appearances. Tyson Wedge of Miscouche has contributed strongly with six RBIs on five hits, including a pair of doubles, and a .417 batting average.
