Team PEI Announces Flag Bearers for 2025 Canada Games Closing Ceremonies
St. John’s, NL – Team Prince Edward Island is proud to announce that medal-winning wrestlers Keely MacGrath and Alexsa Matheson have been selected as the flag bearers for the Closing Ceremonies of the 2025 Canada Summer Games, which will take place today, August 24, 2025, at the Mary Brown Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.
MacGrath of Fort Augustus earned a silver medal in women’s 65 kg wrestling. Matheson of Hazelbrook won her bronze medal in women’s 59 kg wrestling. These medals bring PEI’s Canada Games wrestling medal total to eight, all since 2009. PEI finishes the 2025 Canada Games with 4 medals – the most since 6 medals at the 2011 winter games.
“We’re very proud to be led into the closing ceremonies by Keely and Alexsa, two incredible athletes who represent PEI with pride,” said Nicolle Derry, Team PEI Chef de Mission. “These athletes exemplify the passion, spirit, and determination that all of our athletes strive for. They have bright futures ahead of them and we are excited to watch them continue their athletic journeys.”
This is the third time PEI wrestlers have been named flag bearers since 2013.
“It was so exciting to see them succeed and earn their medals,” said Tim Murphy, Wrestling PEI Director-At-Large and 2025 PEI Mission Staff Member. “But to see the outpour of emotion after the last few years of work really showed how impactful this has been on their young lives.”
The Closing Ceremonies will celebrate the achievements of more than 4,000 athletes from across Canada and mark the conclusion of two weeks of high-level competition, camaraderie, and provincial pride.
