Veronica MacLellan Earns Second Medal for Team PEI at the 2025 Canada Summer Games

August 12, 2025

St.John’s, Newfoundland –  Team PEI’s Veronica MacLellan, of Charlottetown, captured her second bronze medal in the 100m para backstroke finals on Tuesday, August 12 at The Works Aquarena in St.John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador.

This marks MacLellan’s second podium finish of the Games, following her bronze in the 400m para freestyle on the opening day of competition. Her consistent performance and determination have been a standout for PEI at these national Games. MacLellan becomes the first PEI athlete to win multiple medals at a single Canada Games since Jared Connaughton in 2005.

“It feels so crazy, I never thought I would ever get one medal and now getting two is just an insane experience. I feel very proud of myself and very honoured to come here and win medals for my province,” said Veronica MacLellan.

“In the village, so many people have been coming up to congratulate me from the Island, it’s so cool”.

The win brings Team PEI’s medal count at the 2025 Canada Games to two, equalling the provinces performance from the 2022 and 2023 Canada Games. Veronica’s medals also bring the total number of swimming medals for Team PEI at the Canada Games to four. The first was won by Katherine Josey, who earned silver in the 100m freestyle in 1985. In 2017, Katherine’s daughter Alexa McQuaid added a silver in the 50m breaststroke. MacLellan now joins their ranks with two medals of her own, and still has more events to come.

The 2025 Canada Games bring together over 4,000 athletes from across Canada, showcasing the next generation of Canadian sport talent.
